Wait For the Change I was in a big hole, I thought nobody cared I couldn’t climb out from that pit of despair I don’t know how, what when or where But it only got better from there I was working too hard for too little pay Not sleeping at night, I was tired all day Emotionally drained and my judgement impaired Still it only got better from there The sun goes down to rise again The tide goes out, it rolls back in The longest drought will break with the rain When it all looks bad, we wait for the change I was down on my luck, Ioaded with debt Worrying about payments that I hadn’t met The outlook was bleak but I have to declare It only got better from there. The sun goes down to rise again The tide goes out then it rolls back in The longest drought will break with the rain When it all looks bad, we wait for the change © Leigh Sloggett 2017

You know she says she loves me, I’m not so sure of that When she slips out through the back door with her gloves and her hat Working in the sun with her pick and hoe She’s out there in the garden, helping the vegies grow I wake up in the morning and I’m feeling fine I reach across the bed for that good girl of mine When the realization hits me, I’m way too slow She’s out there in the garden, helping the vegies grow The sun comes up, the birds they sing She’s outside with her watering can I’m still here alone in bed Seems I can’t compete with old broccoli head When I ask her to stay, she always says no “I’ve got to get out in the garden and help the vegies grow” Well you see there’s just one thing that keeps on breaking my heart It’s that ever-growing garden that’s keeping us apart If we want to be together there’s one thing I know I’ve got to head down in the back yard to where the vegies grow When my time is done here, I won’t be sad I’m gonna thank my friends yeah, for the good times had It won’t be off to heaven, won’t be hell I go I’ll be out there in the garden, helping the vegies grow © Leigh Sloggett 2013

Fragile 07:22
Fragile Well I’m fragile, handle me with care Yes I’m fragile, handle me with care There’s some things you ought to know, before we walk out of here Well I’m broke yeah, I’ve got nothing to my name Yes I’m broke yeah, I’ve got nothing to my name If you want to hang with me, there ain’t nothing to be gained Well I’m tired yeah, I’ve got to get some sleep I’m tired yeah, I’ve got to get some sleep If I don’t find a bed soon, I’m gonna lay down in the street Well I’m old now, not the man I used to be I’m so old now, not the man I used to be When I look into the mirror, some old guy looks back at me Well I’m foolish, to ever think that it could be I’m so foolish, to ever think that it could be That a fine women like you, would want a tired, weak, poor, old fragile man like me That a fine women like you, would want a tired, weak, poor, old, fragile man like me © Leigh Sloggett 2014

Fast Train 03:06
Fast Train I’m on a fast train going the wrong way But it won’t stop, and I want to get off Like rigging in a wild storm’s rage When tension tightens some heart strings break We had seen some better days Now they’re just memories that are starting to fade I’m on a fast train going the wrong way But it won’t stop, and I want to get off I should have packed my bags and left this place Thought it love but that was my mistake She says she hates me and regrets the day That she ever laid eyes on my ugly face I’m on a fast train going the wrong way But it won’t stop, and I want to get off If I had my time all over again I would have seen where it was going before I jumped in Seems I never learn from my mistake Now I’m getting off before it’s too late I’m on a fast train going the wrong way But it won’t stop, and I want to get off © Leigh Sloggett 2013

Shinjuku Bound Grey clouds drift down over mountain peaks Gently rocking train seat squeaks She takes in the view as she settles down From Matsumoto she’s Shinjuku bound She’ll soon be back into the rut The crowded stations and the peak hour crush As she falls asleep she thinks of where she has been Blues skies and tall trees and crystal clear streams She’s been up in paradise Away from screens and bad advice And cooperate greed Though all good things come to an end She knows she will be back again It’s meant to be But now she’s speeding over ancient land Where farmers toil and cities forever expand With their night life and low life and where excitement is found From Matsumoto she’s Shinjuku bound From moonlight and farm light to tall neon towers Her journey’s over, it’s Shinjuku now © Leigh Sloggett 2014

DAMN YOU WIND Damn you wind don’t blow tonight, hold your deep breath down If I ever asked you a favour, tonight stay out of town For the candle that once lit my room has fallen from its stand And its flame once small now grows taller than any man Well I tried and tried with all my might to beat its anger down But its red tongue grows and its blinding glow has burnt my whole house to the ground Can’t you hear me begging wind why do you ignore my plea You tease this fire and you take it higher to steal all I love from me Damn you wind, oh damn you wind Don’t blow I demand you wind This whole town rests on your whim Don’t blow I do demand Cedar wood and paper are the substance of this town A howling wind and an angry fire and peril will abound And my friends they all lay sleeping, unaware of what’s at hand Oh damn you wind ease up now don’t blow I do demand Damn you wind, oh damn you wind Don’t blow I demand you wind This whole town rests on your whim Don’t blow I do demand Ring the bells and wake the town every woman and every man Pass the buckets down the line do everything you can Take your children from their beds, curse this wind from the devil's fan This whole town is on fire now, this place is surely damned Run now to the beaches this whole town is lost Hurry save your own lives, no time to count the cost But the beaches are too narrow and the flames burn way too high And this sea’s icy chill will kill, friends prepare yourselves to die Damn you wind, oh damn you wind Don’t blow I demand you wind All our lives rest on your whim Save us if you can wind It’s only you who can Don’t blow I do demand © 2004 Leigh Sloggett

Compassion Deficit They say that this is a crisis They say the future’s looking bleaker each day They say that they are our savours I won’t be getting on my knees to pray They say we shouldn’t trust our neighbours They say the enemy is already here They make all sorts of claims for political gains But I’m not going to live in fear While there are people in the world that are suffering Who are reaching out for help just to live I’m going to show them my kindness I’ve got love to give Give me love over hate and derision Give me wind over dirty brown coal A good life is a life lived with empathy In a world where compassion take hold ©Leigh Sloggett 2015

BRAND NEW SUIT Okay I bought my first suit But it’s not me who’s changed Okay I’m a bit older now But my fashion sense remains the same Well my wife she talked me round to What I have fought with all my might But I guess there’s just somethings One can’t stop from happening in one’s life I bought this suit for funerals I bought a white shirt and tie from here I’m gonna use it well I guess they’ll dress me in it when I die I bought this suit and it’s formal Well it makes me look quite smart I could use it for a wedding Or wear it when I depart I never had a use for one I never worked in a big firm And I couldn’t buy a decent one With the money that I earn Buying was stressful I thought here’s good money gone to waste You see a starched up formal black suit Well it’s really not my taste But I bought this suit for funerals I bought a white shirt and tie And from here I’m gonna use it well I guess they’ll dress me in it when I die I bought this suit and it’s formal Well it makes me look quite smart I could use it for a wedding Or wear it when I depart I should’ve bought it long ago I could have worn it every day I could have been a man of substance I guess a suit’s the only way I would have looked much more important I would have earned much more respect But fact I didn’t do so Well it’s not a deep regret Now that I bought this suit for funerals I bought a white shirt and tie And from here I’m gonna use it well I guess they’ll dress me in it when I die I bought this suit and it’s formal Well it makes me look quite smart I could use it for a wedding Or wear it when I depart Well you need a suit for funerals On one thing you can depend There’s really no escaping it Death’s gonna get you in the end Well you need a suit for funeral On one thing you can rely The one thing you can take with you Is your black suit when you die © Leigh Sloggett 2010

about

Wait for the Change is my fourth album release and is a mixture of original acoustic blues and contemporary folk. It includes one cover song, 'Moonshine', a country blues written by Memphis Minnie and a rearrangement/reworking of Leroy Carr's How Long Blues.
The title of the album comes from the opening track and is a comment on the need for patience and resilience, two traits that I had to draw deeply on to see this project through to the end. It took four years to complete due not only to the COVID pandemic that swept the world but also to hindrances from life in general. It’s with a sense of relief that I’m now releasing this collection of songs out into the world.
