LOOKING FOR THE CLUES Stone the crows in Tokyo, they’re driving me insane I’ve got to leave this country soon but first I’ll catch a northbound train There’s a girl up there I fancy, oh I love to see her smile Before my time is done here I’d like to see her for a while Well I came here seeking knowledge, but now I’m just confused I don’t know what the answer is but I’m looking for the clues I’ve been told that what I put out now will come back to me in time But it’s a measure of uncertainty that plays upon my mind I’ve been dancing on hot coals it’s time that I was gone Doesn’t mean my time’s been wasted I’m simply moving on But I’m sure I leave here wiser than when I first arrived The truth is when I came here I didn’t know how I would survive I’II be sad to lose my good friends who made my stay here sweet And one or two more special who made my heart complete There are some that I won’t miss at all and a few that make me riled But the thing I know I’ll long for is to see that one girl smile Well you never know how things pan out I might be back here in awhile And even if things don’t work out well the journey’s been worth whiled © Leigh Sloggett 2008

Blue Jewel 03:08
BLUE JEWEL Blue Jewel what we do to you Forsake your love your charm your beauty too Separate you from the moon and stars Your sister Venus and your brother Mars Please forgive me for the suffering and the pain I’ve seen the carnage and I feel ashamed I pray one day that you’ll be free Of this desecration of your land and sea In every country throughout every age Greed and intolerance have filled the page Can we make the change that it will take Or will our children’s children make the same mistake © Peter Newall 2004

Stone 05:28
STONE Stone thrown into the river Sinks to the bottom and stay there forever Something has changed but it’s not something that you’ll remember Leaves fall with the coming of winter Rot on the ground all orange and amber Get blown by the wind but each year the tree’s growing stronger I look back at a man who was younger Weighed down by questions that hadn’t been answered A journey began but intention was still in the making Define the soul, how do you measure Is it heavy like rock or light like a feather Is it something that grows and lives on forever and ever Is it bright like the sun or vast like the ocean Fresh like the wind but devoid of commotion Unbound by time, jealousy, greed and emotion The stone in the river sits on the bottom Away from the eye and truly forgotten But it suffers no pain And is bound by no problem © 2005 Leigh Sloggett

ON THE CLIMBING ROAD On the climbing road that I often take Just before the top I filled up my tank I was looking back toward the sea When the past revealed itself to me The city streets that had filled my view Became rolling hills before an ocean blue And for a moment I felt so sad Knowing the beauty of what we had I stood there gazing into paradise lost For the price of progress I guess we paid the cost The Garden of Eden torn from the ground To be replaced by a concrete town This future highway where does it end And the damage caused will it ever end My tank was full so I paid the man And I pulled out into a traffic jam © Leigh Sloggett 2006

MONEY CAN’T BUY HAPPINESS They say that money can’t buy happiness But it sure helps ease the stress Of a bank account that’s dwindling And accumulating debt It will buy you a good meal And a place to lay your bed A coat to keep you warm and a hat for your head Education for your children And books for them to read Medical insurance and a bandage when you bleed Who said that money can’t buy happiness Well he must have been a fool Or else he had too much himself to have to play by the rules I want a coin for every raindrop, a note for every star Then just try and stop me I’ll fill up every pauper’s jar The rich man has the power The poor man has despair Fortune rains down on the wealthy It seems that money gets you there It’s true that money can’t buy happiness And it won’t buy good friends And it sure won’t save your souls When you finally reach the end But it would buy you a nice headstone to lay upon your grave Till then it makes the journey easier if you’re not worrying everyday Oh money can’t buy happiness But it the icing on the cake And it’s the sugar in the mixture that makes the cake taste great But it comes at a cost yes nothing comes for free It seems the more of it you’ve got the more you’re gonna need © Leigh Sloggett 2004

Good Fortune 05:52
GOOD FORTUNE Well you don’t know what’s coming around the next bend If you don’t start the journey you won’t get to the end I needed a change from the rut I was in That is exactly how this story begins Some people said stay and others said go And someone I trusted said if you don’t look you won’t know So I packed my bags and I made a brief plan And I bought a ticket to a foreign land Well I couldn’t see where this would all end But you may as well run with the ball when it lands in your hand The goal's always there but it’s not always near The answers will come but when is not always clear I moved around for six months or so I had some good times and I had some lows Then one night I came home and there in my room Was a girl at who’s wedding I’d be the groom Who would have thought when I hopped on that plane That half way round the would in a culture so strange I found my dream in a room that I rent Sitting before me was a gift heaven sent Well I wouldn’t say that it started so smooth But sometimes it takes time to get into the groove But after a while we found our stride Now it works well together that can’t be denied So try and remember when you rise everyday Something good unforeseen is coming your way It might be a prize in a lottery win Or you might bump into a forgotten friend You’ll never know what it will be But good fortune is coming you can take it from me And the chances that you take are the keys to the doors And the more paths that you walk the more that unfolds © Leigh Sloggett 2007

Crayfish Col 06:51
CRAYFISH COL Crayfish Col’s out on the reef working for a wage He’ll rise before the sun each day head out to catch the crays Sometime ago he headed west he’d seen better days Told us all he had to go next day he was on his way He bought four wheels with ready cash and packed his thing away Put his foot on the gas and left his past there in the haze Three days he drove and hardly stopped he could not be delayed Out across the Nullarbor he went on in a daze Well Crayfish Col’s purpose was to leave behind the past And move into the future along a brand new path But the past always comes with you it lingers in your mind It haunts you and eats at you and it hurts from time to time Cray fishing is a lonely life it quickly takes its toll It suits some men they’re loners but that’s not Crayfish Col So once again he packed his things six months he’d been away And slowly made his way back home but he took the longer way Happiness can come easily when you have restless heart When you’re passing time holding the line you need a brand new start It’s passion that keeps us living it’s breeds a love of life It gives direction to your journey makes a wrong turn turnout right Crayfish Col’s called Colin now he has a business that’s doing okay He’s built a house up on the hill that looks out over the bay Sometimes by his window his thought slip away As he looks out over the water and thinks of when he was catching those crays Ah those good old days now so far away But that’s okay might get back there someday © Leigh Sloggett 2003

AM I GOING INSANE? Last night in my dreams everything was going wrong I reached out to you but you were gone Remembered all my savings I had left outside Found the backdoor was open wide. My bath had filled up and overflowed My toast caught fire my TV exploded My new fence fell over my car had rust I was fed up ready to bust Yeah yeah tell me who’s to blame Yeah yeah am I going insane When I woke up you were still there Seems that you hadn’t been anywhere Everything else was just the same way As it had been just yesterday Yeah yeah tell me who’s to blame Yeah yeah am I going insane Little insecurities creeping on me Hormone imbalance or maybe lack of sleep Lately I’ve been noticing my poor memory And when I ring my friends they don’t get back to me Yeah yeah tell me who’s to blame Yeah yeah am I going insane Stress and loneliness and poverty too All add up to take it’s toll on you But when you’re in a rut what can you do You push the rock up the hill it rolls back down on you Yeah yeah tell me who’s to blame Yeah yeah am I going insane Am I going insane Am I going insane © Leigh Sloggett 2003

River 04:47
RIVER River oh river rolls this stone away Turn the broken fragments into sand silt and clay Heart of stone roll away Heart of stone roll away River seeking mercy from the fierce blue desert sky Dusty brown embankment a trickle running dry Would it help if I cried If I could I would cry Storm clouds draining power from the earth up to the sky Bewitching tortured souls then passing on by Only stone can survive Only stone can survive River oh river if I gave myself to thee Would you caress my broken body and float it out to sea Paint my dreams just for me Take my souls and set it free © Peter Newell 2006

BOOMER AND SWEET HONEY Boomer rose from a two days of alcohol induced hibernation It took him an hour or two to regain his orientation Oh the night before the night before had been a hell of a celebration Not that he could remember it now it was up to his imagination Those who had seen it before had all left in anticipation A man rising from a two day slumber is in no mood for accusations But Honey well she stuck around, she was new to the situation This sweet young thing was still trying to decide if this was love or infatuation Later that day they argued on some difference of opinion Sometimes things go too far for little or no good reason When Boomer started yelling Honey wouldn’t stand for it and slammed the door when leaving When voices get raised she won’t stay and left there with her anger seething Alone in an empty house Boomer started thinking Maybe being apart for a while was something he was needing So when the telephone rang he let it ring out thought he felt like he was cheating So a day a week a month went by without them ever meeting Why stay at home it’s Friday night time to rest from one’s occupation Boomer had a few too many he was losing his concentration Well the band had finished and the crowd was leaving the night was nearing conclusion Under car park lights some sorry soul was receiving a pulverization On seeing this Boomer stepped up to try and calm the situation He never could stand unfair odds he had no fear of aggression Who knows why but the crowd stood by and watched things deteriorating A six foot trucker turned on Boomer and chased him near to damnation In and out of cars they danced as gorilla man kept on chasing Until finally he caught his prey like some wild beast on the nature station He took great pleasure in the pain he inflicted till Boomer’s bones were aching It was around that time that Boomer passed out and that was where they left him laying Funny sometimes what you might find when you’re not even looking Boomer lifted up his head to find an angel above him hovering “Hell!” said Boomer “Is this heaven?” “No,” said the angel “It’s the gutter you’re in” Then once again he passed out as Honey stood there looking down at him She had found him laying there when she happened to be passing She picked him up and took him home, washed his wounds and tucked him in When Boomer woke he found Honey curled up naked beside him He thanked the angel and his lucky star put his head down and went on sleeping © Leigh Sloggett 2005

about

This, ladies 'n gents, is a letter perfect blend of folk and blues, one of the best I've ever heard. The spaciousness of the recording is jaw dropping, like the blue-est day of deep summer in the Plains or Outback (Leigh Sloggett's Australian and a friend of Tom Bolton, who issued the marvelous When I Cross the River [here], a CD not to be missed) with a sky wider than heaven. The gentle reproofs and admonitions he pens in his lyrics then become all the more affecting for that atmosphere.

Just as considered, though, is Sloggett's guitar playing (acoustic, lap slide), and the intro to On the Climbing Road contains a simple but impeccable spiritual component lifting the soul as it inflicts an ache on conscience, later counterpointed by a sudden vocal elevation into birdsong falsetto, almost chillingly penetrative. Expect a touch of blues gospel as well, as Money Can't Buy Happiness dips suddenly into the zone, with Liz Frencham's backing vocals doubling down (she plays contrabass on most cuts as well and gets a really resonant fretless sound much more like Mark Egan than the traditional double bass player is able to achieve).

For no reason I can explain, I'm sometimes reminded of Al Stewart here—probably the purity of the recording, the folkiness of the approach, and the internal melodics—though the sound is rarely in that camp, more John Martyn-ish or David Lindley by way of Iain Matthews. Sloggett can also ratchet up the passion when he's of a mind, Good Fortune proves that, but there's such a pacific charm throughout the entire release that Looking for the Clues settles into Nick Drake, Tracy Chapman, and other territories as well. As I said in opening, this is such a seamless meld of folk and blues, with generous infusions of roots country, that it's damn near a newly sophisticated beast of refined contours, perhaps in fact singular.
